We offer full certified pedorthist assessments to determine if a custom made orthotic is right for your foot. Our orthotics are made using ONLY 3D casting techniques. Chiropodists can make adjustments onsite to ensure comfortable and functional fit to your custom orthotics.
Proper foot care is crucial for those with diabetes. The diabetic foot requires extra care and attention and our staff is happy to provide this for you. We also offer counselling and education on daily preventative care.
We offer a wide selection of orthopaedic footwear and always have a pedorthist on staff to help guide you through the fitting process. We are happy to help you select the best shoe for your foot to ensure maximum comfort and pain relief.
To receive care from Chiropodist you do not need a doctor's referral.
Generally our custom made orthotics last between 1 - 2 years. However, the life of your orthotics will vary depending on your lifestyle and use. For example, do you sit or stand for work? Are you an avid runner? Factors like these will determine how long your custom orthotics will last.
Both Chiropodists and Podiatrists specialize in the assessment, treatment, and prevention of lower limb disorders. However, all Podiatrists in Ontario graduated in the U.S. and moved to Ontario before 1993. No new Podiatrists have registered in Ontario for 25 years.
Podiatrists also have a slightly broader range of treatments that they are able to perform. They are able to perform surgeries all the way to the bone, whereas Chiropodists' qualifications allow them to operate as far as the muscle/soft tissue. Podiatrists are also able to prescribe both topical and ingested medications, Chiropodists can only prescribe topical medications.

Sweat secretion in their feet is impaired. This causes abnormal pressure on the foot’s skin, bones and joints, which can prompt sores to develop. If left untreated, these can escalate to serious complications – including infection and amputation.
Moreover, diabetes minimizes the ability to fight infection, meaning lesions heal more slowly. This, coupled with a compromised immunity and the fact many diabetics can’t feel their feet due to nerve damage, makes professional foot care from a reputable clinical team a must.
Prevention Tips:
The first step to prevent complications and take control of diabetic foot health is proper footwear that doesn’t rub, and that accommodates foot abnormalities including calluses, corns or flat feet. At the Hewak Foot Clinic, we’re equipped with the expertise to fit you with orthopedic shoes and customized orthotics that will support and align your feet and body to improve foot function and curb problems associated with diabetes.
A foot-care program - In diabetics, foot-related problems can escalate quickly if left untreated. That’s why we create a foot-care plan that’s tailored to your needs, and recommend frequent visits to see us. During a check-up, we examine the skin and nails on your feet for irritations. We also test blood flow and nerve damage, and check for bone, joint and muscle problems. Moreover, we can guide you in self-care practices and teach you how to recognize potential issues and warning signs.
If you have diabetes, the right footwear coupled with a customized orthotic and regular check-ups from our foot-care team can help prevent foot wounds and deformities. With every step you take, you’ll be on the right path to maintaining optimum foot health.
